Articles for 07/20/11 Dr. Shaohao Chen

(updated with Abstract)

On July 20, Dr. Shaohao Chen will give a talk about attosecond science:

Title:
Attosecond Science: Time-resolved Electron Dynamics in Atoms and Molecules

Abstract:
Do you want to see an ultrafast world?
Do you want to see atomic photography?
Do you want to know about a potential Nobel-prize topic?
All the answers are in attosecond science.

Attosecond is equal to 10^-18 second, which is the time scale of the motion of electrons in atoms. Attosecond science is a new and exciting research topic in both fundamental and applied atomic molecular optical (AMO) physics. In my talk, I will talk about the some aspects of the attosecond science, such as generation of attosecond pulses, attosecond measurement technique and time-resolved measurement of electron dynamics. As an example, I will discuss some exciting results for the measurement of time delay in photoionization of atoms, which have been published very recently.

The talk will introduce two articles:
1.
Delay in Photoemission
Science 25 June 2010
Vol. 328 no. 5986 pp. 1658-1662
2.
Probing Single-Photon Ionization on the Attosecond Time Scale
Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 143002 (2011)

Time: 07/20/2011 12:00-1:00 pm
Location: Rm 435 Nicholson Hall
