Articles for 07/27/11 Qinqin Lü

Title: Quantum Gas with Interaction and Disorder

In short, I will talk about two articles:

1.
Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 230401 (2011)
Can a Bose Gas Be Saturated?
2.
Nature Physics 6, 87-95 (2010)
Disordered quantum gases under control

Time: 07/27/2011 12-1pm. Bring your lunch! (as we don't provide lunch or cookies...yet...)
Location: Rm 435, Nicholson Hall

Full version:

I will first introduce some background such as:

- what is Bose Einstein condensation?
- Cold atom experiments involving optical lattice
- Interaction effects and phase transition

As a statistical example to show the interaction effects and to verify Einstein's theory as the correct theory at non-interacting limit, I will spend a little time on the 1st article:

Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 230401 (2011)
Can a Bose Gas Be Saturated?
Naaman Tammuz, Robert P. Smith, Robert L. D. Campbell, Scott Beattie, Stuart Moulder, Jean Dalibard, and Zoran Hadzibabic

link

Then, when bringing in disorder, novel phenomena such as Anderson localization of matter-waves can be observed. This part will focus on the 2nd article:

Nature Physics 6, 87-95 (2010)
Disordered quantum gases under control
Laurent Sanchez-Palencia & Maciej Lewenstein

link

The latter part is not exactly what I am working on so hopefully I won't be standing blank-minded too much.

Fall semester meeting arrangement

As agreed by a small vote among frequent participants, the club will meet at the following time and place in the fall semester, starting at Aug 24:

Wednesday, 4-5 pm
Rm 262 Nicholson Hall.

The lunch time is no more available because it conflicts with several classes.

I am now registering speakers for the fall semesters. Sign up early to get your preferred time slot.

update 08/21: The fall semester meeting time is changed to Tue 4-5pm. Location is still Rm 262. see this post.

Articles for 07/20/11 Dr. Shaohao Chen

(updated with Abstract)

On July 20, Dr. Shaohao Chen will give a talk about attosecond science:

Title:
Attosecond Science: Time-resolved Electron Dynamics in Atoms and Molecules

Abstract:
Do you want to see an ultrafast world?
Do you want to see atomic photography?
Do you want to know about a potential Nobel-prize topic?
All the answers are in attosecond science.

Attosecond is equal to 10^-18 second, which is the time scale of the motion of electrons in atoms. Attosecond science is a new and exciting research topic in both fundamental and applied atomic molecular optical (AMO) physics. In my talk, I will talk about the some aspects of the attosecond science, such as generation of attosecond pulses, attosecond measurement technique and time-resolved measurement of electron dynamics. As an example, I will discuss some exciting results for the measurement of time delay in photoionization of atoms, which have been published very recently.

The talk will introduce two articles:
1.
Delay in Photoemission
Science 25 June 2010
Vol. 328 no. 5986 pp. 1658-1662
2.
Probing Single-Photon Ionization on the Attosecond Time Scale
Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 143002 (2011)

Time: 07/20/2011 12:00-1:00 pm
Location: Rm 435 Nicholson Hall

Friday, July 8, 2011

Article for 07/13/11 Chinedu Ekuma

On July 13, Chinedu Ekuma will talk about:

Doping-dependent thermopower of PbTe from Boltzmann transport calculations
Phys. Rev. B 81, 195217 (2010)

Although it is a PRB article, it is only 5 pages and Chinedu promises it will be interesting.

The journal club meetings for the Fall semester will start around Aug 20. The weekly meeting time is to be determined. If you are interested in giving a talk in the fall, please email me or see me at Rm 215A.
